CHAPTER TEN

I assumed that the next item on the agenda would be an interview with Killian Jarrow via my sister, Ayla. Unfortunately, vampires appear to be as annoying in death as they are in life—the vampire ghost refused to focus on anything but Ivy Masterson’s desire to return to the human side of life.

“If he’s not going to talk, he’s not going to talk. Call us if you need us, then. I guess,” Emma told Ayla, her expression confused by Killian’s refusal. She shook her head slowly, then looked at me briefly with a raised eyebrow. “We’re going to head back over to Rex’s bunker, but we can be here faster than you think.” She fixed her gaze on my sisters. “And don’t invite in any vampires.”

“Oh, that won’t be a problem,” Ms. Masterson assured us, her eyes darting sideways, taking in the darkening shadows of the quiet street in front of the Masterson house. “The guru called your mother for assistance the day after Ivy was turned.” She made a motion toward the street. “Cassandra is now protected from vampires. They are unable to cross the town line.”

Bernie was the town’s wizened guru, the spiritual leader of the Cassandra community that worked closely with the mayor to run all aspects of the strange little psychic town. The mayor, by the way, is my boyfriend’s mother—and, come to think of it, also my boss’s girlfriend.

Small towns, right?

I don’t know why anyone bothers to signal on the street. Everyone knows where everyone else is going, anyway.

Emma frowned. “If your town is protected from vampires and they can’t come in, how is Ivy still here?”

“She’s not fully transitioned,” I reminded her. “Until she’s a complete and total vampire, those wards won’t affect her one way or another.”

We chatted for a few more moments once again about Killian and why he might not have given us more information, speculating that maybe he was trying to protect Ivy in some way. But it was all just guesswork at this point.

We eventually said our goodbyes and parted ways. Emma and I rode silently for a bit, absorbed in our thoughts about the strange vampire ghost’s afterlife insistence on saving the girl he was partially responsible for attacking.

“Do you think Killian is hiding something from us?” Emma asked as we drove back to Rex’s bunker. “Well, I mean, obviously, he’s hiding something from us. He won’t answer questions. But is he not answering questions because he’s focused on Ivy or because he’s really trying to hide something?”

I thought for a moment.

I’d been focusing on Damien and Killian as a pair of nasty vampires, seeing them both as potential villains in whatever story we ultimately uncovered. Killian’s death—and his insistence he wanted to help Ivy—wasn’t very villain-like, though.

Rex claimed Killian was a bully, and I trusted Rex’s take on things. Emma’s brother had no reason to lie to us I could see, and he knew if he lied to Emma again, their relationship might not survive it.
